You sit down to pray. You mean to. You want to.
And nothing comes.
Maybe it's been a hard week. Maybe it's been a hard year. Maybe you're not even sure what you'd say if the words did show up. So you sit in the quiet feeling vaguely guilty, like you've shown up to something unprepared, and eventually you give up and scroll your phone instead.
If that's you, I want to say something gently, and I want you to actually hear it:
You are not praying wrong. You are not failing. You are tired.
There's a quiet lie a lot of us absorb somewhere along the way: that prayer is a performance. That you need the right words, the right posture, the right amount of faith, or it doesn't count. So when you're depleted, when you're anxious or grieving or just running on empty, the very moment you most need to reach for God becomes the moment it feels hardest to.
But prayer was never meant to be a recital. The oldest prayers we have aren't polished. They're raw. How long, O Lord? My God, why have you forsaken me? Half the Psalms are someone falling apart out loud and trusting that God can handle it. That's not a lapse in faith. That is the faith, bringing the real thing, unfinished and unflattering, and believing you'll still be met.
So here's what to do when the words won't come.
Not a paragraph. One. Anxious. Tired. Angry. Help. That's a complete prayer. God isn't grading your grammar.
This is exactly why we built the Mood Check in Unspoken, you tap how you feel, and you're handed a prayer for that exact thing. On the days you've got nothing, you don't have to generate it from scratch. You can borrow words until your own come back.
Some nights you can't even read. That's okay. Press play, close your eyes, and let a voice pray it for you. Receiving is also faith.
No streaks. No quotas. No "I missed three days so what's the point." Grace doesn't keep that kind of ledger, and neither should you.
The words will come back. They always do. But even in the season where they don't, especially then, you are not alone in the silence. The silence is allowed. You're allowed to bring it.
That stuck, wordless place you're in? It's not a closed door.
It might be the most honest prayer you've prayed in a long time.
And if a hard season is what brought you here, these prayer journal prompts for hard seasons give your hands somewhere to start tonight.
And if the problem is not the words but the feeling — if you sit down and register nothing at all — that has its own quiet path: how to pray when you feel nothing.
